Happy Das Dharam Day 2024!!!

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee

Naam Meditation is the Key to True Happiness

Main points from a satsang delivered by Hazoor Maharaz Darshan Das Jee in the UK in the series of audiotape satsangs: S10.

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee explains that the month of Magh (the first month in the Hindu calendar in January) is extremely blessed, but only when one has the shelter of a Perfect Master and has the gift of Naam. Symbolically Guru Arjan Dev Jee explains that we should bathe in the dust of the Guru’s feet. What this means that we should seek the shelter of a Perfect Saint, attain Naam and meditate on Naam. Guru Jee is referring to Naam that resounds in the human body. In the Gurbani Naam is referred to as anhad shabad. Naam cannot be heard or spoken, it is not a caste, or a creed and it cannot be found in any book.

Some devotees attain Naam but fail to meditate on it. Maharaz Jee asks that if a doctor writes a prescription for our ailment or pain and, if we keep on reading the prescription repeatedly, will our pain ever go away without consuming the prescribed medicine?  Similarly, if we keep reading recipes, can we really taste the food? Or if an accountant keeps reading his/her accounts, will this lead to the acquisition of funds? Likewise, unless we meditate on Naam, we will never experience what it truly is. Maharaz Jee says that the Naam Guru Arjan Dev Jee if referring to is already in our body. We need a Perfect Saint to activate this Naam and it can take many lifetimes to finally attain Naam. Naam is the key to all happiness. As Guru Nanak Dev Jee writes:

ਏਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ।।
Ek tera Naam taray sansar
It is your Naam that uplifts all

Maharaz Jee says that instead of mending our ways, we lay blame on our Guru for all our problems. It is time that we looked deep into ourselves. No matter where we wander, in the end, we all have one destination. When we fall in love with the divine, then all we see is the divine: we become one with everything and everyone.

On 1 January we celebrate and go to parties, but do we ever think that we are losing another year, another year to be true to the promise that we made to the divine before we were born? The promise is to attain the shelter of a saint, to attain Naam and to meditate on Naam.

In this world, we should not go around doing things egotistically, thinking that nothing will happen without us. As Baghat Kabir Jee writes:

ਕਾਮੀ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧੀ, ਲਾਲਚੀ, ਇੰਸੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ
Kami krodhi lalchi, inse bhakti na hoye,
The lustful, angry or greedy cannot meditate,

Bhakti karai koi surma, jati varan kul khoye.”
Only a valiant who rejects caste, creed and race can truly meditate[1]

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee explains that the path to a Guru’s shelter and Naam meditation is for the valiant, the brave and courageous. To follow the spiritual path, we should truly love all beings, human and more than human. As Guru Nanak writes:

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
Sabhnaa jeea kaa ik data so mai visar na jaee.
All beings belong to the one divine. May I never forget the divine!

Maharaz Jee explained to a devotee that before the devotee was just working for himself. However, now the devotee was gaining a wealth of good karma. How is this, asked the devotee? Well, Maharaz Jee said, “This is because now, you do everything in the name of your murshad (Perfect Saint). Once you do everything each day selflessly as a service to the divine (as opposed to trying to gain self-importance) then you gain good karma”. Here Maharaz Jee quotes Guru Amar Das Jee who writes:

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਏ ਤਿਤੁ ਨਾਤੈ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਏ
Athat teerath Gur Sabadh dhikhae thith natay mal jae
Through the Guru’s Shabad (Naam) we can see sixty-eight sacred shrines; bathing in it (Naam meditation) washes away our filth (of the mind)

Only those who are blessed get the shelter of a Saint. Once they have the shelter of a saint, in this month of Magh, they will attain peace and salvation:

ਮੇਰੈ ਮਿਨ ਤਿਨ ਭੁਖ ਅਿਤ ਅਗਲੀ ਕੋਈ ਆਿਣ ਿਮਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
Mayrai man tan bhukh aut aglee koi aan milaavai ma-ay.
Within my mind and body, there is such a great hunger; if only someone would come and unite me with Him, O my mother![2]

Maharaz Jee says “I have told you many times, that if you are not willing to change your ways, then don’t come here. You are not going to get this precious human life again and again”. Furthermore, he asked his devotees not to despair. He said: “I have established this home (place of congregation known as Darbaar) so that you can all gather as one. Become each other’s friends. Let there be no difference between Hindu’s and Sikh’s. Follow the dharma of humanity. Your unity is the greatest strength. If you take one step towards God, God will take ten steps towards you”. In the end, Naam is the key to true happiness.

Happy Birthday Maharaz Jee and Maharani Jee – 2023

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee and Maharani Pali Darshan Das Jee

Become a true devotee

Main points related to what it means to be true devotee from a satsang delivered by Hazoor Maharaz Darshan Das Jee on the 26th of December 1985 in the UK.

Baba Farid Jee was travelling back home on foot after meditating for a period of twelve years. On the way he was troubled by the sound of the chirping birds, and he said: “Die birds!” and they all died. Then he said, “Come back to life birds”, and they returned to life. After journeying for a while, Baba Farid Jee became very thirsty and saw a well nearby. A woman was filling her water pot and he asked her for some water. The woman said that her friend’s house was on fire, and she had to get the water to her friend’s house before she could quench his thirst. Baba Farid Jee was very surprised by this answer. He wondered when she would fill the pot, get the water to her friend’s house, and then return and offer him some water. His thirst was intense, and he became very angry. “Hey woman, you do not know who I am, I am Farid and I can curse you!” he said. The woman whose name was Rang Ratni responded by saying, “I know who you are. You can kill birds and bring them back to life, but I am no bird, I am a human being, and I have the shelter of a saint. Your curse cannot kill me”. Baba Farid Jee was in awe of the faith that Rang Ratni had in her Guru. He asked her who her Guru was, and she said it was Muhamad Qutab Deen Chisti. Baba Farid Jee then went to Muhamad Qutab Deen Chisti and asked for his shelter and asked for the blessing of Naam. He meditated for twelve years and gained such spiritual strength that the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Jee compiled the writings of Baba Farid Jee in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee explains that those who do not meditate will find it very difficult to find inner peace. Bhagat Kabir used to visit a devotee and asked him to take Naam. The devotee said, “No not yet, I am waiting for my son to get married, then I will take Naam”. When his son got married and was settled, Bhagat Kabir visited the devotee again and asked him if he was now ready to take Naam. The devotee said, “Not yet, let me play with my grandchild, let him learn how to walk, eat on his own and then I will devote time to Naam”. Bhagat Kabir visited the devotee’s home after quite a while and noticed that the devotee was no longer there. He asked his son where his father was. His son said his father had gone to heaven, to which Bhagat Kabir laughed very loudly and said: “How do you know he is in heaven?”. When Bhagat Kabir went inward, he saw that the devotee had been born as a bull and was being worked very hard by some farmers. Bhagat Kabir communicated with the bull and said, “My dear one, if you had listened to me and taken Naam, and even if you had meditated for a short time, you would not have had to take the form of a bull. Now you will have to go through this life, and you will move onto a few more places before you can take the form of a human again”. The bull was then bought by a trader and suffered a lot of abuse. He finally died and his skin was used to make leather.

Maharaz Jee explains that meditation is the key to realising who we truly are. He quotes Guru Arjan Dev Jee who writes:

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ॥[1]
parabh kai simran tirath isnaanee
Through meditation we visit all purifying baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage

prabh ke simran dargeh manee
Through meditation, one attains honour in the court of the Lord

Maharaz Jee gives yet another example of true love. Guru Gobind Jee lost four of his sons during the war against the Mughals. When he was informed of the death of his children, he had tears in his eyes. His devotee asked him, Guru Jee, “Can a lion leader like you have tears in his eyes?” To which Guru Jee responded, “I am crying not because I am sad about the death of my sons. These are tears of happiness, because God has given me the strength to accept His will and to continue to serve His people. If He had given me a few more sons, I would gladly have sent them to war, even if they were martyred”. The devotee then bowed at the Guru’s feet and said, “Dear Guru Jee you are truly divine.”

Maharaj Jee explains, that when a devotee falls truly in love with God, then nothing worries that devotee; the devotee fears nothing, is not affected by what anyone says or does and accepts the divine will. Explaining what true love is, Mahraz Darshan Das Jee narrates the story of a woman who arrived at Anandpur Sahib and fell at Guru Gobind Singh’s feet and cried, “Guru Jee, my son has a very high fever and is lying sick at home and cannot move. I lost one of my sons during the war and he became a martyr. I want you to cure my sick child so that he too can go to war and become a martyr.” Guru Jee told the woman that her son would be fine, he would go to war and become a martyr. This is when Guru Gobind Jee spoke the following verses:

ਇਨਹੀ ਕੀ ਕਰਿਪਾ ਕੇ ਸਜੇ ਹਮ ਹੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੋ ਸੋ ਗਰੀਬ ਕਰੋਰ ਪਰੇ
Inhee ke kirpa ke sajay hum he, nahee moh so gareeb karor paray

It is because of such devotees that I am who I am, otherwise I am so poor and there are millions like me around

Even though he was the Guru, in humility he gave the full credit of his divinity to his devotees.

Once Guru Arjan Dev Jee was dictating verses of the Gurbani to Bhai Gurdas Jee and Guru Jee transcended his human form and was one with the divine. In his transcended state he began to say you, you, you, you and Bhai Gurdas Jee went on writing the word “you” referring to the divine.  When Guru Jee opened his eyes, he asked Bhai Gurdas Jee “How many pages have you filled with the word “you”?” Bhai Gurdas Jee responded, 17 pages. Oh, dear one said Guru Arjan Dev Jee, please cut it down to 17 times instead of 17 pages.

Such is the love of the true devotee explains Maharaz Darshan Das Jee. Once we begin our true meditation, we begin to see the divine everywhere and in everything.

Open Up Your Heart to Spiritual Light

This story was narrated by Hazoor Maharaz Darshan Das Jee on 15th May,1983 during a sermon which he delivered at the Birmingham Dera, UK.

Saints always come to unite us and not to divide us. My appeal to you is to love and respect one another. There is no bigger attribute and weapon greater than love; in love even big snakes are tamed and enemies surrender their weapons. I appeal to you to walk together in unity and travel the path of the truth. Speak the truth, even if you do nothing else. If you have done something wrong, own up and say yes, I have made a mistake; admitting your mistake is fine.

The following story explains the importance of owning up to our mistakes and changing our way of life.

Once Guru Nanak Dev Jee and his devotee, Mardana, were travelling to Jabalpur where the demon Koda Rakshas lived. A fellow traveller asked Guru Nanak where he was travelling to. When Guru Nanak Dev told him where he was going, the fellow traveller said, “don’t go any further, there is a demon called Koda who lives ahead and he is extremely dangerous, he robs people and then eats them!”. To this, Guru Nanak Dev Jee responded, “Dear fellow, what do I have that Koda could possibly rob?”.

Maharaz Jee explains that when Guru Nanak Dev Jee and Mardana reached Jabalpur, Mardana went ahead and approached Koda for some food since Mardana was very hungry. Koda however, caught Mardana, tied him up and held him upside down over a huge cauldron of hot oil, and threatened to fry him. Another version of the story is that Mardana went to Koda and asked him, “What are you doing here?”, to which the demon responded, “My name is Koda, and people call me the demon Koda.” Mardana asked Koda “Now that you are a demon, what do you want to become next?”, Koda responded “Well if I meet a good saintly person, I may even become someone else.” Mardana said “Well, if that is the case, my Guru Nanak is close by and let me introduce you to him.” Koda said, I will only meet your Guru if he comes to me. I am not going anywhere.” Mardana said, “Guru Nanak cannot come to you, because Koda, you are one who has committed crimes and atrocities, and so it is your duty to go to the Guru”. Koda said, “If that is the case, then I am going to fry you in this cauldron of oil. So, call out for your Guru. Let us see if your Guru is a true incarnation of the Lord as you claim.”

It is said, that if you remember someone with a true heart, let alone a person, even God can appear in front of you. Facing his imminent death, Mardana remembered Guru Nanak Dev Jee who in turn heard Mardana’s prayer and immediately appeared at the scene. Guru Nanak Dev Jee asked Koda, “My dear friend, why are you committing these atrocities?”. Koda responded by saying “If you have any power, then show me that you can release Mardana.” Guru Nanak Dev Jee said that the truth cannot be contested. He also said that it is wrong for a weak person to fight a stronger one, or for a wise person to argue with a foolish one. “If you are wise and I am unwise, that is fine, or if I am unwise and you are wise, that is fine too. There is no need for a contest” said Guru Nanak.

Koda replied “No! If as Mardana says you are the image of the Lord and ….” but Guru Nanak Dev Jee cut him short by saying “It does not matter whether I am the image of the Lord or not. The question is why are you engaged in such crimes? Do you have a family, sons and daughters?”.  Koda said he had a big family and he robbed and looted people to support his family. To this Guru Nanak Dev Jee asked, “Koda if you face any problems, will your family come to support you?”. “Absolutely, they will!” said Koda. Guru Nanak Dev Jee asked Koda to summon his family.

Guru Nanak Dev Jee addressed his family and told them that Koda was engaged in very serious wrongdoings. He asked Koda’s family if they would support Koda if he was punished for his misdeeds. To this the family responded, “No, there is no way we will support him or stand by him.” Then Guru Nanak Dev Jee said to Koda, “So your family will not support you, how do you feel about that?” In great disappointment Koda cried and said, “What do I do now?”

Guru Nanak Dev Jee asked Koda to perform his duty. He said “In the name of the Lord, tread on the right path, and the gains you receive, distribute these amongst the needy.” “Guru Jee, I cannot do this, because I am a big sinner”, said Koda.  Guru Nanak Dev Jee said “Stop there! You have admitted that you are a sinner, and this is more than enough to meet the Lord.” Koda said he did not understand. Guru Nanak Dev Jee further explained that if a person is repentant, then he/she can be forgiven by God and by the whole world. However, if a person is full of ego and refuses to admit to their mistakes, then neither the Lord, nor society will forgive them.

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee explains that we should know the difference between what is right and wrong. Once we begin to tread on the right path, then our hearts will open to the spiritual light.

Maharani Pali Darshan Das Jee Remembrance Day – 13 August 2023

Maharani Pali Darshan Das Jee

POEM IN REMEMBRANCE OF MAHARANI PALI DARSHAN DAS JEE

In the embrace of love, she holds me tight,
A guiding star through the darkest night.
Her tender touch, a soothing balm,
In her warm presence, I am calm.

With a heart of gold and hands so kind,
Her love, a beacon, always to find.
Through laughter and tears, she’s been my rock,
Her strength unwavering, like a sturdy dock.

In the tapestry of life, she weaves her care,
A selfless love beyond compare.
Her wisdom, a treasure trove so deep,
In her arms, all my worries sleep.

She nurtured my dreams with every stride,
In her embrace, my fears subside.
A love so boundless, it knows no end,
My mother, my confidante, my truest friend.

Her smile, a sunburst on a cloudy day,
Her voice, a melody that lights my way.
In every moment, her love’s on display,
A guiding star that will never stray.

In gratitude, my heart does swell,
For the love she gives, I cannot tell.
But in this poem, my soul takes flight,
To honor my mother, my guiding light.

Many Congratulations on Das Dharam Foundation Day 2023

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee

Many congratulations on Das Dharam Foundation Day 2023. This is a very auspicious day for the Sachkhand Nanak Dham Mission. As we have explained in previous Newsletters, Maharaz Darshan Das Jee established this mission on 16 February 1980. Das means “one who serves the Lord” and Dharam refers to “our promise to God before our birth” (for more details please See Nanak Dham Newsletter, (2020), Vol. 1, Issue 1).

Below we cover some key points from a Satsang that Maharaz Darshan Das Jee delivered on 16 February 1985 in Birmingham, UK.

On this day I appeal to you to treat each other with respect, rise above disputes related to caste, colour, creed and those between families and states, and focus on humanity. This will give you peace and happiness. Our relationships should be free of expectations and selfish needs – this should be our Dharam (promise that we made to God before we were born). We should love and serve those with whom we have no relation, to whom we are not bound by familial or other obligations.

I have served you through this mission due to your love and support. I cannot take credit for the progress this mission has made. Progress is always made through your unity, through the saad sangat (congregation of a Perfect Spiritual Master).

Furthermore, I have repeatedly said, that in this mission, men and women are equal: men and women should stand shoulder to shoulder and serve humanity.

At the worldly level, we spend a lot of time, energy and attention on how people have hurt us, or on how we could have averted a lot of trouble and angst if things had not happened in a certain way. However, instead of focussing on all these issues, if instead we choose to focus on the divine, then the Lord will come and stand by us when we have any worldly problems.

The question arises, why do we have to go through such hardship? The answer is because all that we do, is to fulfill our own needs and desires. We rarely if ever do anything without expectation and some level of selfishness. We spend so much time praying, and serving, and yet we do not attain inner happiness. We do not attain patience or contentment. We are forever restless, irritated and not at peace. This is why I give you this message today: Put away the worldly mess. Do this through your Dharam. The real meaning of the word Dharam is to be true to your promise. As the saying goes:

ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਜਾਏ ਪਰ ਵਚਨ ਨਾ ਜਾਏ।
Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye
Life may go, but the promise has to be fulfilled

Ragu kul reet sada chalee aee
Such were the principles of the Ragu clan (of Lord Rama)

As the 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Jee writes:

ਬਾਂਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਕੜੀਐ
Baah jina deeya pakarhiyai
Literal meaning: Once you hold the arm of someone
Spiritual meaning: Once you make a commitment to the Lord

Ser deejey baahn na chhodeeyai
Life may be sacrificed, but the promise must hold

Tegh Bahadur boleya
Says, Guru Tegh Bahadur

Dhar piyee dharam na chorayaa
Better to be arrested than to let go of one’s divine promise

Dharam’s real meaning is to stay true our promise; the promise we have made before our birth. Guru Jee had made the following promise to the divine before he was born: “I will do Naam meditation, I will love your people, I will share your message(s) with humanity”. So my message to you today is that what you have gained, the peace of mind that you have, please share it with others. You can gain much more spiritually by serving humanity compared to any other service in this world. Once you start serving humanity, everything else will fall into place, almost automatically. When we serve humanity selflessly, then even if we are confronted with challenges, they do not bother us, we still feel joyful. However if we serve with pride and ego, then even when the going is good, we will be unhappy.

The day the Das Dharam mission was established, on the 16th of February in 1980, there was a solar eclipse. Most people were very superstitious and were sitting at home terrified and afraid to venture outdoors. On this day, we served food and conducted the entire program to mark the founding of this mission, all outdoors without any fear. We sat together and recited verses from the Ramayan, the Geeta and the Quran. Many people said to me, “Maharaz Jee, nothing negative or untoward happened today; all went really well”. To this I responded that one day I will have to give a sacrifice for this mission.

Jo tau prem khelan ka chao
If you desire to play this game of love with Me,

Sirr Dhar talee galee mayree aa-o.
Then step onto My Path with your head on you hand

Eith Maarag Pair Dhhareejai
When you place your feet on this Path

Sir Dheejai Kaan N Keejai
Give Me your head, and do not pay any attention to public opinion

Sacrifices have been made since the Das Dharam mission was established. In 1984, our buildings in India were destroyed, lives were lost. But that is fine. I have no worries about this nor any complaints. This is an old habit and has happened right from the beginning; I am now used to it. Not many could bear the sacrifices that have been made in this mission, but as I said, I am at peace with this.

When there are thorns on the road, then wear tough shoes. However, you cannot begin to remove the thorns! Don’t worry about gossip or slander or what people think of you. If someone says that you are thief or are ill mannered, you should not take this personally. This is all okay. You do not need to justify your words or your behaviour. The truth through your actions will come to the fore on its own. You do not need to do anything all.

I ask you not to waste your time while you are here. Life is indeed very short, just 70-80 years. Try and follow the teachings of a living Perfect Saint and chart a virtuous path for yourselves. Stay steadfast in the shelter of a Saint. Move away from trying to prove always that you are right, and others are wrong. There is no end to this argument.

God has told me that he knows all that is in your heart (good and not so good). He will bless you and rid you of your worldly problems if you have full faith in him. His message to you is to make him your best friend and he will always be with you. For those treading on the wrong path, his message is that he will forgive you if you change your ways.

The time to come is challenging, but it is a time during which I would like you to stand strong. Like dark clouds difficult times will pass. Let things go, rise above the smallness of your mind. Like I have said in the past, an irritated person will make any excuse to argue with someone else. For example if a man is irritated but cannot find a reason to argue with his wife, he will make up a reason: he will say, “when you roll out the dough to make chapatis, why do you move your body? If find this irritating”. This then leads to conflict.

If people think negatively, it is very difficult to stop them. But in the Das Dharam mission, if you cannot change, then I urge you to change the thinking of your children so that they rise above such negativity. Teach them that promises are very important. Tell them that once you have made a promise, dear child, you have to fulfill it, even if you lose everything. This is your Dharam.

You are a Das (servant of humanity) so rise above worldly issues and focus on your spiritual path. Move forward in unity, serve humanity, and be true to the slogan: Nanak Naam Chardi Kala Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhala. Don’t just chant this, practice it too. Focus on your divine promise.

FOCUS ON DIVINE LOVE

Many congratulations on the Birthdays of Maharaz Darshan Das Jee and Maharani Pali Darshan Das Jee. The 7th of December marks the day our Guru and Guru Mata (mother) were born and is one of the most blessed days in the Sachkhand Nanak Dham Mission. On this momentous day, we share the essence of a satsang that Maharaz Darshan Jee delivered during the month of Asoo (September).

We should have one desire: to be united with the divine. We are however too embroiled in the material world to walk the spiritual path. We often feel we are walking the spiritual path, but through our actions we become egotistical and are unable to break free from worldly desires. The story of Baghat Ramanand Jee’s death provides us with a powerful example of how we can get entrapped by our worldly desires. Baghat Ramanand Jee was a renowned saint of his time and Baghat Kabir Jee and Baghat Ravi Das Jee, both well-known mystics and perfect masters had taken Naam from him. When Baghat Ramanand Jee came to the final moments of his life, his focus shifted to a sweet berry; he had a sudden desire to eat the fruit.

Baghat Ramanand Jee had told his devotees that when he left his body, they would be showered with beautiful flowers from the skies, and they would hear the melodious sound of bells. However, when he left his body, his devotees did not see any flowers nor hear the sound of bells. His congregation became very upset because what their Guru had promised them, had not transpired.

In a short while Baghat Kabir Jee, arrived at the scene. He asked “What is the matter, why are you are all so forlorn?” The devotees explained what had happened. Baghat Kabir then said “Well of course you will see flowers and hear bells as your Guru promised but, this will only happen when Baghat Ramanand Jee reaches his spiritual home. He has left his human body, but he has yet to reach his spiritual destination”. Baghat Kabir Jee pointed to a tree and said: “Go to that tree and bring me that berry growing on the tree”. He then opened up the berry from which emerged an insect. “Now cremate this insect and the skies will shower you with flowers and you will hear the sound of bells”, he said.

Indeed, to the astonishment of the congregation, flowers showered from the skies and bells rang. The congregation asked Baghat Kabir Jee to explain what the relationship was between the insect and their Guru. Baghat Kabir Jee explained that in his last moments, Baghat Ramanand Jee’s focus shifted to the berry and he had a strong desire to eat a berry. His desire manifested into reality, and he became an insect so that he could feed on the flesh of the berry. His desire was thus fulfilled.

The following saying explains this clearly:

ਜੈਸੀ ਆਸ ਤੈਸਾ ਵਾਸ ।
Jaisee aas, taisa vaas
As you desire, so you shall manifest
Kavi Vach
A poetic form of expression

Baghat Ramanand Jee who had spent his whole life on the spiritual path had to become an insect due to his small desire to eat a berry. What will happen to all of you who have such huge worldly material desires? What will happen to you? I am not trying to instil fear in you. I want you to focus on love. God always breaks our worldly desires and helps us to create spiritual desires. God says, that when you are ready to unite with me, I will then send you a Perfect Master.

The way to unite with the divine is through Naam meditation. To get contentment and patience, you need to meditate. Our body is abode of the divine. We do not need to make pilgrimages and recite prayers. We just need to remember the divine.

When good times come, you say that this is due to your intelligence. But when hard times come, you say that God has brought these upon you. Please rise above these thoughts. Consider both good times and hard times to be God’s blessings. You need to be humble and spiritual love should be your focus. I give you the example of Birlni (also known as Shabri). She was from a low caste and the villagers had banished her. Yet Lord Ram Chandar Jee travelled to her and ate tainted berries she had gathered. The berries were tainted because each day in anticipation of meeting Lord Ram, Birlni would collect berries for him. However, she tasted each berry to make sure it was sweet. She had true divine love for Lord Ram. Because of her true love, Lord Ram travelled to see her, she did not travel to Ajodhya to meet Lord Ram.

I say to you that it is time to change. Try to know yourself. Leave those paths which are causing you harm. Take responsibility for your actions. Ask yourself, why have you come here? Take from me that, so you do not need to travel to see me again and again. Take from me that, so that I come to see you. I will visit you in dreams and guide you.

Guru Arjaan Dev Jee, the 5th guru writes:

ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਾ ਪਾਇ ॥
Sant sahai prem ke hao tin ke lagga pai
Saints are the helpers of the Lord’s lovers; I touch the feet of those who love truly

So, what is love? I say there are many types of love. Everyone loves children because they are so loveable, including the children of animals. There are six types of love. The first is when a human child is born, everyone showers the child with love; parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties are all besotted with child. The second love develops when the child begins to attend school. The child loves his/her school friends and teachers. The child grows up, goes through university and develops the third kind of love, the love for work mates and friends. The fourth love is the love the person feels for his/her partner or spouse; each follows the other around and they are absorbed in other. They both then develop the fifth kind of love for their child and the circle goes on. The sixth love, I always say is the most dangerous type of love, the love of one’s honour and image. In order to protect this worldly image, brothers kill each other, and wars are fought.

Ture love is the love you have for the divine. However how can you love the divine without seeing the divine? You have to see the divine and to do this, you have to remember the divine with a true heart, then He will put you on His lap. So let true love be your focus.

Shahidi Diwas (Martyrdom Day) 2022

Hazoor Maharaz Darshan Das Jee

Nanak Naam Chardi Kala Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhala

Today we remember our beloved Maharaz Darshan Das Jee on his martyrdom day. In his remembrance, we share a poem he wrote on his life.

Hanju Tere Ne Nain Mere Ne
The tears are Yours and the Eyes are Mine

The tears are yours and the eyes are mine
Hijran ch ronday pai jeray ne
In separation from the beloved, my eyes are tearful

Javavan hak kedetay, mera hak ki ae
How do I claim any right, when I have no rights?
O vi kho lay methon ditay kaday jeray ne
Those rights that I once had, have been snatched away

Kara ki pesh tenu main, mere kol key ae
What can I give you? What do I have anyway?
Mere palay agay tere hi gham batheray ne
I am already burdened with your grief
Hanju Tere Ne Nain Mere Ne
The tears are yours and the eyes are mine

Marna aniyain motay mera shok nahi
An untimely death is not my choice
What other support do I have to live anyway?
Hanju Tere Ne Nain Mere Ne
The tears are yours and the eyes are mine

Karan itaraz tere te, meri mazal ke ae
To disapprove of your will, what right do I have

Darshan’s destiny from the beginning is marred in darkness

Happy Jyoti Diwas Day 2022

Maharaz Darshan Das Jee

Jyoti Divas: The promise of light

Many congratulations on Jyoti Diwas, 2022. This is a very blessed day for the Sachkhand Nanak Dham Mission because as outlined in the first Newsletter, this is the day that we celebrate Maharaz Darshan Das Jee’s spiritual revelation: “On 15 August 1971 a divine voice spoke to Maharaz Jee and said ‘There is work that God has sent you to do here, get up and do it. You need to begin this work by delivering satsangs (spiritual sermons)’. Darshan responded by saying that he had no spiritual knowledge, but the voice assured him that once he took the first step, everything would manifest of its own accord.” Maharaz Jee delivered his first Satsang on 15 August 1971 in the town of Batala and it was on this day that he called himself Darshan Das (Das means servant of humanity). Below are two stories narrated by Maharaz Darshan Das Jee’s during a satsang he delivered on 3 August 1986.

Maharaz Jee explains that once when Guru Nanak Dev Jee Sahib was traveling to Lahore, he stopped by a village at the request of devotees. During those times, the devotees from the village would invite the Guru to their home where they would host a communal meal and there would be a sermon by the Guru as well as chanting and singing of spiritual hymns. A devout devotee, Moosan, and his son, Samam, had a deep desire to host the Guru and his entourage in their humble home. In deep devotion, they both said a prayer to the Guru, beseeching him to visit their home. Their prayer was heard, and a date was set when the Guru would visit their home. However, they were very poor and did not have the resources to host the Guru’s visit to their home. So, they both began to work really hard, to build the resources that were required to host the Guru and his congregation. However, just days before the Guru was due to visit, Moosan developed a very high fever and the money they had been saving for their Guru’s visit had to go towards Moosan’s treatment. The day after Moosan’s treatment, a team from the Guru’s entourage came out to ascertain that all was in order for the visit at Moosan and Saman’s house. Father and son looked into each other’s eyes, and in doing so, both came to the decision that it would all be fine. They asked the team to come the next morning to collect the resources needed for the function. They knew they had no money, but they also knew that if they did not host the Guru and serve him, their entire lives would hold little meaning for them.

Maharaz Jee explains that there are many versions of the story of what the father and son did next. Maharaz Jee’s version is that they decided to rob a rich man to host the Guru. They knew it was wrong, but they felt they had no other choice. They robbed a house owned by a rich trader and while Moosan exited through the chimney, Saman went back in to grab a few more rations. He accidentally made some noise, and the owner of the house woke up. Saman was halfway up the chimney trying to escape when the owner of the house grabbed his legs and tried to pull him down. Moosan, on the other hand tried to pull his son up and out of the chimney. Exasperated, Saman asked Moosan to cut his head off. He said, that if his father did not do this, then Saman’s identity would be revealed, and this would bring shame upon the name of Guru Nanak. So Moosan took out his knife and beheaded his son and let go of his body. On seeing the beheaded body of the boy, the owner panicked and did not know what to do. He was frightened that the police would arrest him on charges of murder. As the owner was wondering what to do, Moosan knocked on the door and asked him what the whole commotion was about. Moosan offered to take the body away to save the owner of the house any trouble. He carried Saman’s body and head home, placed them together, put a sheet over them and began to make preparations to host Guru Nanak.

Maharaz Jee explains that such was the love of the father and son for their Guru, that a father was willing to take the life of his own son for the sake of their Guru. The son who was equally devoted asked his father to do so.

The visit was going very well. The congregation was fed, and everyone was very grateful. Guru Nanak then said, we need to leave now, but before we go, I want to see your son Saman. Please go and call him. Moosan said, “Dear Guru, Saman is not well at all. He has a high fever and is not able to come pay his respects.” Guru Nanak then called out to Saman, and said “come out my son” and miraculously Saman walked out to pay homage to the Guru.

This, Maharaz Jee explains, is what happens when you have unconditional love for your Guru. Maharaz Jee then quotes the words of Guru Gobind Singh Jee who wrote:

ਜਿਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀਓ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਇਓ ॥ (page 40)
Jin prem kio tin hee prabh paio
Only those who have loved, will realize the Lord

Similarly, Maharaz Jee explains, the story of Rukhmani and Radha. Rukhmani was married to Lord Krishna and Radha was his devotee. The community sneered at Radha and looked down upon her because she was poor. Maharaz Jee explains that Rukhmani thought that because she had material wealth, she could win over Krishna’s heart. She decided to hold a contest on who Krishna loved the most and would tip the scales: Radha who was materially very poor, or her, Rukhmani who owned countless jewels and fineries. Radha, happily agreed to the contest. Rukhmani brought out a pair of scales. On the one hand was Rukhmani’s material wealth, and on the other, Radha’s single tear of love for Krishna, which she placed on a leaf of the tulsi (sacred basil) plant. Radha tipped the scale.

Maharaz Jee quotes the writings of the Guru Nanak Dev Jee:

ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥(page 731)
Mere laal jeeo teraa ant na jaanaa
O my Dear Beloved Lord, your limits are not known

Toon jal thal maheeal bharipur leenaa toon aape sarab samaanaa
You pervade the water, the land, and the sky; You Yourself are all-pervading

Maharaz Jee says, that worldly riches are no contest for love. Rukhmani’s worldly riches and her self-pride could not win over Krishna. She did not understand the depth of Radha’s love for Krishna, encapsulated in that one tear, which was truly divine. Just like we cannot understand God’s limitless universe, we cannot really understand Radha’s love from an intellectual perspective.

Maharaz Jee quotes Guru Arjan Dev Jee:

(page 522)
Mehimaa kehee n jaae gur samarathh dhaev
The Glory of the all-powerful Divine Guru cannot be described

Maharaz Jee explains that love in essence cannot be measured. Indeed, how can we measure the unmeasurable? Rukhmani sought to measure Radha’s love but love is outside the bounds of measuring scales.

Maharaz Jee quotes Guru Nanak Dev Jee:

(page 730)
Kaun taraajee kvan tulaa teraa kvan saraaf bulaavaa
What scale, what weights, and what assessor shall I call for You, Lord?

Kaun Guru kai peh deekhiaa levaa kai peh mul karaavaa
From what Guru should I receive instruction? By whom should I have Your value appraised?

Maharaz Jee explains that God’s value cannot appraised. Everything belongs to the Lord: the earth, the sky, water, the sun, the stars, fire, the moon. Really, how can we appraise God? Similarly how can Radha’s love be appraised?

Maharaz Jee explains that Rukhmani had all her friends on her side, while Radha was humbly and patiently waiting on the other side; Krishna was watching, quiet and amused. Maharaz Jee says, that Radha’s love is best explained by Guru Nanak who writes:

ਆਪੇ ਕੰਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ਤਰਾਜੀ ਆਪੇ ਤੋਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ (page 731)
Aapae kanddaa thol tharaajee aapae tholanehaaraa
You Yourself are the balance, the weights, and the scale; You Yourself are the weigher

Aapae dhaekhai aapae boojhai aapae hai vanajaaraa
You Yourself see, and You Yourself understand; You Yourself are the trader

Maharaz Jee explains that Rukhmani did not understand that everything is divine. She did not realise that this was not a contest of ego and pride. The Lord himself is the scale, and the weigher. He himself is the one who measures and one who is measured. Rukhmani still persists, she does not give up. She wants to win. Maharaz Jee quotes Guru Nanak Dev Jee again:

Man thaaraajee chith thulaa thaeree saev saraaf kamaavaa
Mind is the scale, consciousness the weights, and the performance of Your service is the appraiser

Radha’s love tipped the scales because her mind and soul were walking in the same direction. Her service and devotion for Krishna was unparalleled.

Ghat hee bheethar so sahu tholee ein bidhh chith rehaavaa
Deep within my heart, I weigh my Husband Lord; in this way I focus my consciousness

Like Rukhmani (who represents our mind) we need to understand the love of Radha (who represents our soul) for Krishna. Maharaz Jee concludes the story by explaining that in the end, all that matters is love, unconditional love. This is the love that Radha has for Krishna.

Happy Jyoti Diwas 2021

A very happy 50th Jyoti Divas to Maharaz Darshan Das Jee’s congregation. In our first Newsletter we explained that on 15 August 1971, Maharaz Darshan Das Jee delivered his first Satsang in the town of Batala, India. It was on this day that he called himself Darshan Das (Das means servant of humanity) for the first time.

In 2020 and 2021 the world has been severely hit by one devastating COVID-19 wave after another. We are facing lockdowns, illness, loss of livelihoods and despair. And yet those of us who are in the congregation of a perfect Master are able to turn inward and focus on our Naam meditation. We can chant the spiritual slogan Nanak Naam Chardi Kala Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhala for all those who are suffering.

The world as we know it has changed. And yet this is the ripe time to ask ourselves why we are here, why have we been given this life and where are we going after we leave our body? We are here only for a while. What is the divine promise we made before we were born? Are we being true to that promise?

Below we share Gopinath Jee’s story[1] which Maharaz recited to us during his satsangs:

In the 11th Century King Gopinath decided to become a Fakir (religious ascetic) and went to Guru Gorakhnath and told him about his decision. Guru Goraknath told him that henceforth he would have to beg for alms for his livelihood. Citizens living in Gopinath’s Kingdom gave Gopinath over and above what they normally would have given to a Fakir; his wives gave up all their jewellery saying that, “when our King has become a Fakir, then what good are all these jewels and fineries for us?”. When he went to see his mother she said, “you have come for alms and this is what I will give you. Remember the following three things:
(1) It is my wish that you should always sleep and rest on the best of the silk mattresses because you are my son (2) you should eat the richest and most nutritious food available, that strengthens you because you are my son (3) you should live in a strong palatial fort because you are my son.

Gopinath replied “I would have cursed you if you were not my mother. If I wanted all the worldly riches, the silk mattresses, the rich food and the big palaces, then why would I have relinquished my kingdom and become a Fakir? I have given all this up”. His mother replied “son, you have misunderstood me. What I meant was that when you are extremely tired, my wish for you is that you sleep very soundly and even if you have to sleep on thorns, you will feel as if you are sleeping on a silk mattress. When you feel very hungry, even plain bread that is 2-3 days old (dipped in water) will nourish you just as a very rich meal would. In terms of the big palatial house, I was referring to your body. Make yourself so strong and full of wisdom that you do not fall prey to lust, anger, greed, attachment or pride. While you serve humanity, the sick and needy, the young, the old, men and women will come to you. Serve with them honour and dignity. He touched his mother’s feet, took her blessings and spent the rest of his life in the service of his Guru.

So what is the moral of this story?

Our soul wants to unite with God from whom it has been separated for many lifetimes. Just as a newly married bride is separated from her husband, while we are in the human body, our soul is separated from God. If we want to unite with God while we are alive, then the way to do so is through Naam Simran (meditation). So even in a situation of lockdown and in times of difficulty, we should feel totally cared for by our Guru (like Gopinath’s mother wanted him to feel during times of hardship).

How we live (including our education and our work) should be a path to our spiritual goal which is to merge with the Lord. Our materialist worldly achievements are temporary and we will leave them behind when we leave our body. So we should break the pattern of being led by our mind and adopt practices and a way of life that is led by our soul through the congregation of a saint.

Maharaz Jee says:

All you need is love. That love is only born when you seek the shelter of a perfect saint and attain Naam. Your Naam meditation will free your soul from the entrapment of the mind.
